Amidst horrendous flooding around Manila and major rice-growing across Luzon in the Philippines, some good news has emerged for rice farmers—Submarino rice—rice that can survive around 2 weeks of being under water. Rice is unique because it can grow well in wet conditions where other crops cannot, but if it is covered with water completely it can die, leaving flooded farmers bereft of income. More >

Special rice gift arrives in flood-ravaged India
As fresh waves of floods hit India’s north-eastern state of Assam, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has stepped up to help rice farmers by providing free seed of its popular flood-tolerant rice Swarna-Sub1. Fondly called “scuba” rice, because of its ability to survive under water for up to two weeks, Swarna-Sub1 has been widely adopted across eastern India, but had yet to reach the state of Assam. South Korea: Training held on rice technology transfer systems
The two-week training course on rice technology transfer systems in Asia was held on 30 July-10 August 2012 at the International Technology Cooperation Center of the Rural Development Administration (RDA) in Suwon, South Korea. The course was attended by 15 participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao-PDR, Nepal, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam and is on its twelfth offering. More >

Rice breeding course ongoing in IRRI
Twenty-one participants from 10 countries came to IRRI to attend the annual Rice Breeding Course, one of IRRI's most popular training courses, on 1-16 August 2012. Topics covered in the course include fundamentals of rice breeding (theory and practice), screening for biotic and abiotic stresses, experimental design and data analysis, and DNA marker-assisted selection. Wilson Aala, a former affiliate undergraduate thesis intern in IRRI, received the Undergraduate Best Thesis Award during the 28th anniversary of Philobioscientia (UPLB Life Sciences Society) on 2 August 2012. Wilson's award-winning undergraduate thesis was titled Morphological and molecular characterization of novel salt-tolerant germplasms from the Philippines and Bangladesh. He was supervised by Glenn Gregorio, IRRI scientist and breeder.

Invitation to join Social Science Network
SSD is inviting the following to join the Social Science Network: economists, anthropologists, sociologists, human ecologists, psychologists, geographers, public policy specialists, political scientists, marketing specialists, business model specialists, and other related social science disciplines who have completed or are in the process of completing a graduate degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) and have at least 1 year of developing country experience; and social scientists across the globe with research interests or experience in Southeast Asia and South Asia on rice-based cropping systems.
