Farmers team with scientists to make the perfect rat trap
Rice farmers from two districts in Vietnam have successfully implemented a community action plan to thwart rodent damage to their crops—thus reducing damage caused by the pests and giving them a 20% boost in income. Every year, Vietnam loses 10% of its rice production to rats. In years of rat outbreaks, this rises to 20–30%. More >

Bangladesh: Farmers use too much fertilizer, research says
A farmers’ participatory research in Bangladesh on site-specific nutrient management found that farmers use more fertilizer than necessary, resulting in added costs but not necessarily better production. It established that farmers use more fertilizer than recommended by the BRRI and soil tests. The excess fertilizer costs BDT 5025 per hectare, but is not resulting in more profit. More >

IRRI staff celebrate birthdays to benefit poor children
Seven staff members of SSD who had their birthdays in July started a different way of celebrating: share the joy with less fortunate kids through Project ShoeBox of the 4th Light Armor (Masigasig) Batallion of the Philippine Army. Project Shoebox is an outreach activity in which shoe boxes filled with school supplies and other goodies are solicited from donors and distributed to poor kids. More >

The 2012 season of basketball games for both women and men of the IRRI Sportsfest has officially ended last 23 July and 3 August 2012 respectively. Invitation to join Social Science Network
SSD is inviting the following to join the Social Science Network: economists, anthropologists, sociologists, human ecologists, psychologists, geographers, public policy specialists, political scientists, marketing specialists, business model specialists, and other related social science disciplines who have completed or are in the process of completing a graduate degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) and have at least 1 year of developing country experience; and social scientists across the globe with research interests or experience in Southeast Asia and South Asia on rice-based cropping systems.
