A 5-day training workshop, Technology updates on stress tolerant rice testing in coastal areas of the Mekong Delta, was held on 25-29 June 2012 at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) in Bac Lieu, South Vietnam. The workshop was attended by 44 participants from DARD-Bac Lieu, Can Tho University (CTU), and the Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute (CLRRI). Read more

Philippines: IRRI and partners install community dryer in Bukidnon
Up in the mountain ranges of Impasugong, Bukidnon, rice farming is a challenge. Farmers deal with rainy weather all throughout the year, making grain drying a difficult task. To ease their problem, nongovernment organizations Kaanib Foundation, Inc., and Catholic Relief Services (CRS), worked with the Asian Development Bank-funded IRRI Postharvest Project and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), and helped install a reversible airflow flatbed dryer for the community. Farmers are often at risk of losing investments in their farms due to uncertainties in weather, diseases, and pest outbreaks. Lost along with these investments are income, livelihood, and security. A public-private partnership seeking to provide accurate tools in decision-making to support farmer insurance, is underway. Read more

The Institute recently supported the Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) through a donation of IRRI books, manual and guides, magazines, and scientific journals. The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) hosted the 26th IRRI-UPLB Dual Meet—which it won—held on 29-30 June 2012 at the Copeland Gym on the university campus. Deputy Director General for Communications and Partnerships V. Bruce J. Tolentino and UPLB Chancellor Rex Victor Cruz gave the welcome remarks during the morning program, which kicked off with the Executive Fun Run. Read more

IRRI acquires antivenin
IRRI has acquired antivenin from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) on 26 June 2012, after hosting the Snake Bite Medical Management Training of the Joint IRRI-UPLB Management Committee on 20 June. The recently conducted training and the acquisition of antivenin are significant improvements to the Institute’s emergency response capability to snake bite incidents. Read more

By Bill HardyIt has been a while since I last prepared one of these columns but the humorous mistakes have been accumulating, so here goes:
“the white black planthopper”: What about the red green planthopper?
“poof of concept”: Poof! And there goes your concept.
“the Gandhi bug”: Where are the gundhi bug and the Zeigler bug?
“the brown planhopper”: It hops from one strategic plan to another.
“virus spices”: What kind of condiment is this?
“criterium”: Could this be a movie title?
“low soil zing status”: This could be lacking a certain spark.
“scarifying yield”: The yield was so low that it felt wounded.
And there is a difference between a magnet and a magnate.
Lessons to be learned? Don’t trust your “spellchecker,” use the dictionary from time to time, and be aware of what emerges from your computer.

2012 IRRI Young Scientists Conference
The first IRRI Young Scientists Conference will be held on 8-9 November 2012 at IRRI Headquarters in Los Baños with the theme, Sustaining excellence in rice research. It aims to provide young rice researchers in IRRI a platform to present their research findings, share experiences and ideas, and discuss recent trends in science and agriculture.
The organizing committee invites all postdoctoral fellows, visiting researchers, students, and nationally recruited staff involved in IRRI’s research to present their work.Abstracts are expected from all disciplines pertaining to rice research. All abstracts will be reviewed by experts of the concerned discipline. Based on the number of abstracts selected, presenters will be divided into different sessions. Each session will be chaired by guest scientists. Submission of abstracts is from 1 July-31 August 2012.
The conference program will include oral presentations, panel discussions, and recognition rites. Top presenters will be awarded cash prizes and certificates. Presenters will be recognized with certificates.To attend, interested staff should register on or before 31 August, 2012. Registration is free.
