IRRI moisture tester commercialized

After discussions with several electronics manufacturers in the Philippines, Cambodia, and India, IRRI finally found an industry partner to commercialize the low-cost IRRI moisture tester. Many inquiries and orders for the previous version showed that the moisture tester has the huge potential to finally provide affordable means to measure moisture content in village postharvest operations. Rice races against rising temperatures

By S.V. Krishna Jagadish, scientist (plant physiology), IRRI
1315-1415 H, Thursday, 28 June 2012, Havener Auditorium, IRRI

Abstract:

Research on high temperature in rice over the past decade has focused primarily on the flowering stage, with little or no progress in research on the vegetative and other key developmental stages such as panicle initiation and gametogenesis. Research on rice response to short durations of exposure to intense heat at precise developmental stages continues to provide important knowledge. However, we understand little about aspects related to longer durations of stress and rice's ability to acquire thermo-tolerance. In addition, heat stress that shortens the grain-filling period strongly affects grain yield and quality.

In this presentation, Krishna will discuss the progress of research in tackling the problems mentioned above. Specifically, he will highlight a series of physiological and molecular studies spanning key developmental stages in rice. Economic losses associated with high-temperature-driven milling-quality outcomes and their implications under future warming scenarios will also be discussed.

2012 IRRI Young Scientists Conference

The first IRRI Young Scientists Conference will be held on 8-9 November 2012 at IRRI Headquarters in Los Baños with the theme, Sustaining excellence in rice research. It aims to provide young rice researchers in IRRI a platform to present their research findings, share experiences and ideas, and discuss recent trends in science and agriculture.

The organizing committee invites all postdoctoral fellows, visiting researchers, students, and nationally recruited staff involved in IRRI’s research to present their work.

Abstracts are expected from all disciplines pertaining to rice research. All abstracts will be reviewed by experts of the concerned discipline. Based on the number of abstracts selected, presenters will be divided into different sessions. Each session will be chaired by guest scientists. Submission of abstracts is from 1 July-31 August 2012.

The conference program will include oral presentations, panel discussions, and recognition rites. Top presenters will be awarded cash prizes and certificates. Presenters will be recognized with certificates.

To attend, interested staff should register on or before 31 August, 2012. Registration is free.

Visit the IYSC website for more information or send a message to 2012iysc@irri.org. Govinda Rizal heads the 2012 IYSC organizing committee.
