Golden Rice in the news
In August, new research by Tufts University and others was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showing that the beta carotene produced by Golden Rice is as good as beta carotene in oil at providing vitamin A to children. The study demonstrates that children, who are among those most vulnerable to vitamin A deficiency, could benefit from Golden Rice as a steady source of the nutrient. Read more » | Golden Rice FAQs

Bangladesh: CSISA specialist wins best paper award
Harun-Ur Rashid, cropping systems specialist of the Khulna Hub of CSISA Bangladesh, won the best session paper award for Increasing productivity of rice-rice cropping system adopting short duration rice and mustard and relay cropping, which he presented during the International Conference on Environment, Agriculture, and Food Sciences held in Phuket, Thailand, on 11-12 August 2012.

New publication
RIPPLE newsletter, May-August 2012
A new project, Closing rice yield gaps in Asia (CORIGAP), which will begin in January 2013, is featured in the latest issue of RIPPLE. The new 4-year project, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, will focus on enhanced productivity of rice production systems through more efficient use of resources (e.g., water, labor, and nutrients) and a reduced ecological footprint. IRRI staff donate to flood victims
IRRI's HCCRO has turned over donations from IRRI employees to the Municipal Disaster and Risk Reduction Coordinating Councils of the towns of Los Baños and Bay and continues to coordinate relief assistance and feeding programs from volunteer organizations. Read more »
IFEA provides relief to flood victims
The IRRI Filipino Employee’s Association, Inc., with facilitation from IRRI's HCCRO, distributed relief goods on 4 September 2012 to IRRI staff who were affected by recent flooding in the area around Laguna Lake. IFEA's mandate includes providing support and assistance to its members.

Obituary
Obet Delgado, 61
Roberto “Obet” Delgado, a former staff at IRRI headquarters, died on 8 September 2012 at the age of 61. Obet was a driver at IRRI for several years. His remains lie at his family's residence in 1153 A. Mabini St., Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Interment will be on Thursday, 13 September, at 1400 H. Please offer prayers for his family during this difficult time.

The 6th International Hybrid Rice Symposium is being held this week at the Taj Krishna Hotel, Hyderabad, India. SSD is inviting the following to join the Social Science Network: economists, anthropologists, sociologists, human ecologists, psychologists, geographers, public policy specialists, political scientists, marketing specialists, business model specialists, and other related social science disciplines who have completed or are in the process of completing a graduate degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) and have at least 1 year of developing country experience; and social scientists across the globe with research interests or experience in Southeast Asia and South Asia on rice-based cropping systems.
